Over the last few years, I’ve spent a lot of time in Maidstone going about day-to-day tasks – but after doing the stepintothepast walking tour I was genuinely blown away.
I never realised just how much rich and fascinating history was right under my nose. The town is filled with fabulous buildings, hidden ancient bridges, beautiful riverside walks, and tranquil green spaces that I had simply overlooked.
The tour was paced perfectly and packed with interesting stories and facts. Our guide’s knowledge of Maidstone and wider historical context was clearly extensive, and he delivered it all in a way that was fun, engaging, and inclusive for everyone on the tour.

A fascinating walk. I didn’t realise there was so much history in Maidstone and how important it’s location was in terms of industry.
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and had planned the walk carefully. Starting at the train station we walked down to the river and along the river bank to the Archbishops Palace, stopping from time to time with snippets of history. We then walked up Gabriel’s Hill to Jubilee Square where Daren explained about the markets in the town. Across to Fremlin Walk, named after a brewery which used to be there. From there across the shopping centre to where Maidstone museum is.
We finishing the walk outside Maidstone prison. It was 2 hours well spent.
